A study in contrast: light green foliage against a darker framework.
Form & character
The erect fronds are narrow and divided. Blackish-brown scales cover the stalks and midribs, while emerging foliage can be yellow-green. The plant may be deciduous or semi-evergreen, depending on its setting.
A place to grow
The RHS recommends cool, moist shade. A sheltered site with well-drained soil is a useful starting point, with regular watering during the first season.
A detail to notice
Observe a developing frond from the side. Look at the relationship between the central line, the scales and the unfolding green surface.
