A seasonal fern whose light texture rewards a closer look.
Form & character
The fronds divide into smaller, toothed segments, producing an intricate outline. Midribs may be green or reddish. This is a deciduous plant: its seasonal absence is as much a part of its habit as its fresh foliage.
A place to grow
A sheltered, shady position and fertile, moist soil suit lady fern. The RHS recommends neutral to acidic conditions enriched with leaf mould or garden compost.
A detail to notice
Look for differences between young and mature fronds on the same plant. Record the date and light conditions alongside a sketch or photograph.
