Hart's-tongue fern

Asplenium scolopendrium

Whole, undivided fronds give this fern an unmistakably bold outline.

Form & character

The rich green blades are strap-shaped, with margins that may ripple gently. Linear groups of spore cases form across the undersides, creating a second pattern beneath the smooth upper surface.

A place to grow

A humus-rich, moist but freely draining position suits it well. Shelter the foliage from strong midday sun, and keep a newly planted fern watered during its first season.

A detail to notice

Compare the shape of one complete frond with a divided fern nearby. Notice its edge, central line and the way the blades overlap without needing to collect a leaf.
